Fan production house The Next 17 put up a smattering of new Kenner-style figures today. These are fan-made figures at a high price. New additions include Hem Dazon, Feltipern Trevagg, Dr. Evazan, Wuher, Lak Sivrak, and some others. Check 'em out here.
Via the Glyos News Dump: New Healey Made Raider Saturday, February 4. The Raiders are pretty fantastic figures and have come in dozens of colorways so far. They're not cheap, but they're about as close as you can get to a new old Kenner-style action figure... and I include Hasbro's own Kenner-style figures in the mix. These are generally, in terms of sculpt, closer to the original (old) article.
I really like these guys. Click here for a review of the Shadow Raider and click here for a look at the Revenge Raider.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Aayla Secura (The Black Series). In the not-too-distant future, right now A.D., there as a guy named Adam not too different from you or me. And you should really just relax for Figure of the Day #3,000 - which is a milestone for what kicked off as a filler feature with diminishing returns. Thankfully, the figure is excellent and Hasbro did a great job with her. It's strange that she has pre-2020-style knees, but one of last year's finer figures is a keeper. Read on!
Hasbro posted its latest Star Wars Fanstream Wednesday morning. There's a lot to take in, and I have a checklist of all the new names for pipeline reveals and actual reveals (and the embedded video) after the jump. So if you want The Black Series and The Vintage Collection, read more. But the most important thing are the Kenner-style The Retro Collection figures! A new The Book of Boba Fett wave was revealed in name only, and it looks like one heck of a wave.
Target will get another "Prototype" figure, this time it's The Mandalorian (the vinyl cape one) - but what makes it interesting is "Kenner blue" accessories. That's a selling point. The new wave of new characters includes Boba Fett (Desert/Nomad), Mando (new), Grogu (new), Luke Skywalker (Jedi, "refresh"), Fennec Shand, Cad Bane, Krrsantan, and a Tusken Raider. That's eight new or newish figures, and no droids, but at least we get some aliens that might be fun.
Ad: A new exclusive! This Star Wars: Return of the Jedi 40th Hologram Luke Glow-in-the-Dark Pop! Vinyl Figure - Entertainment Earth Exclusive is what it says. You can put it in front of Mighty Jabba, to offer him a gift - these two droids. (Two droids not included, sold separately.) This true blue hero is expected around April.
Well, they can't all feel like a great deal: Grogu (The Black Series). It's the accessories from the somewhat more-expensive-than-he-should-be $10 figure with a floating egg for $25. He's guaranteed to sell, the paint is fine, he's cute, but you might cringe and grit your teeth when you see him next to other $25 figures. You might cringe and grit your teeth when you see him next to $10 figures, because there's no level of "pretty good" that makes up for "this would be puny if it were a 3 3/4-inch release and it's a 6-inch release." This week in Q&A - A tax upon them! Is it just Boba Fett? Also a spectrum of infinite scales - why are so many action figures too big, or too small, to be compatible?
Be sure you send in your questions. The mailbag is out of questions, so if you got some, send some in. Read on!
If we cannot be free, at least we can be cheap. Amazon has Star Wars Retro Collection Boba Fett (Morak) Toy 3.75-Inch-Scale The Mandalorian Collectible Action Figures on sale for $5.49 which, adjusted for inflation, is still a preposterously cheap price.
Heck, $5.49 shipped is a pretty good price just to steal his blaster for your old Boba Fett figures.
This is one of my favorite figures out of Hasbro in recent years, and I'd say if you still buy from Amazon it's worth their selling it too cheaply for you to get one. Click here to check availability.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Darth Maul (The Black Series). This is a pretty excellent figure - the facial expression is superb, the head spikes are spiky, the outfit is good, and the articulation is great. If you like this costume, this is a very good figure of it. Read on!
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Migs Mayfeld (The Black Series). He's Bill Burr, but with lots of guns and a good recreation of his on-screen, The Mandalorian season one costume. I'd say buy it, and I'm cranky and old. Read on!
This week in Q&A - Why are there no new retro retro figures? Does Lucasfilm and/or Hasbro hate us? Also Why aren't we getting follow-through on the new stuff? It looks like it's sort of impossible to get this right.
...and 2023 if off to a slow start, but I am OK with that.
Be sure you send in your questions for 2023. The mailbag is out of questions, so if you got some, send some in. Read on!
Your pal and mine Seth Longmire has been working on some fun retro-style 3 3/4-inch playsets to go with the myriad retro, old, vintage, indie, and other action figures we all own. His PROTOTYPE Mini Space Bar - Custom 3 3/4" Action Figure Playset is up on Etsy now - it's orange and should fit pretty much any old-school 3 3/4-inch Kenner style figure. There's no Kenner-flavored Wuher to be had, but surely Guinan needs to do something between tours of duty. Check availability here - also a bigger, more luxe version is on the way.
While not licensed, this No. 39020 (second shooter) is a WWF-esque take on Greedo. A painted Japanese vinyl figure, pre-orders are now open for $70.00 a pop. (That's a lot more than his PVC figures, which tend to be $20-$25.) If you like wrestling and Kenner toys, this might be just the thing for you - or not, what do I know? Click here to check availability.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Grand Inquisitor (The Black Series). It's a pretty good figure of a twerp of an interpretation of the character! The head isn't too perfect, but he has a nice cape, decent armor, and good articulation. The make-up doesn't quite match the series, and that make-up doesn't quite replicate the look of the species as seen previously. But it's available, you can buy it. Read on!
Over at 16bit.com Figure of the Day I look at newish and old action figures three times a week! They're very rarely Star Warsy, but this one is close enough to share here.
I just got this retro-Kenner-esque Healey Made Trooper (Bulloch) Action Figure and it's great. The new head works with old figures too, and it seems like the kind of thing Kenner would make if Star Wars action figures continued without new movies in the 1980s. It sold out, and I suggest getting one (or a future repaint) if it is possible to do so. Do read on, and stay tuned for whatever the next recolor may be!
