This week in Star Wars Q&A - kid stuff - what is it good for? And Let's go on a date... well... we don't have the dates.
Also a letter to Santa for The Retro Collection. We had an incredible year. We got a Return of the Jedi carded wave plus a six-pack, we got Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett waves, we got three 2-packs of bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back, and we even got the back half of the original 12. But, of course, I'm greedy and am asking Santa for more.
Be sure you send in your questions, the mail bag is empty. I need another question for next week. Read on!
Because I was lazy and didn't check the search box while writing my last figure review, Reader Todd wrote in to say: "I've had a custom retro life day chewie for quite awhile now! Check out the cape master: https://thecapemaster.com/collections/star-wars/products/6
I was lamenting that there should have been a Kenner-style figure, given the Holiday Special's unique vintage, and fans have once again done what the Lucas/Disney Industrial Complex have not. The robe (no figure) is $10, and they also have some distinctive upgrades for the Tusken Raider robes and other replacement Star Wars capes.
Ad: Amazon has the Star Wars: The Retro Collection Biker Scout and Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker Kenner figures from earlier this year for a mere $6.99 each. That's less than they cost originally, when adjusted for inflation. Grab 'em while you can. (Also, support the site - if you buy something, we may get a commission from the sale.)
Buy yourself a gift. They're cheap.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Chewbacca (Life Day, The Vintage Collection). Pondering his orb! This is a figure over 40 years in the making, taking a 2004 body and giving him an orb, a slanket, a new head, and a new hand. It's not quite a perfect match for what was on The Star Wars Holiday Special, but it's probably all we will get in the world of action figures. Is it good enough? Read on!
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Pre Vizsla (The Black Series). You wanted him when the cartoon was still on, but hey, now you've got his revised armor with the fancy helmet and Darksaber. For a retool, it's pretty good! You might even see it in stores, so grab one if you see it and remember who he is. Read on!
This week in Star Wars Q&A - The Bad Batch! Where are the rest of them in The Vintage Collection? And Mission Fleet - hey, at least I didn't wait until Christmas to ruin Christmas.
Be sure you send in your questions, the mail bag is empty. We have no questions for next week's update, which may mean I get a break. Read on!
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: R5 Droid (Advent Calendar 2022). It's a nutcracker, I think! You can see the eyes in the neck, and the dome is a hat, and the beard is on the top of the body. I think. Maybe it's just a test of your human imagination to see patterns where only chaos exists... but I like to think the red, black, gold, and white droid is here to open snacks. Read on!

...and they're OK. Hasbro gave Gizmodo the debut, and The Phantom Menace Goes All the Way Retro In These New Star Wars Toys where you can flip through a 6-pack of figures that the article says is $60, which is cheaper than the $70+ 6-packs on the market today. In a previous fan stream it was said the set would be exclusive to Target, but Gizmodo makes no mention of the retailer. Given the glut of store exclusives in closeout shops now, I could see some plans changing.
The set contains six figures: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Amidala, Darth Maul, Jar Jar Binks, and a Battle Droid. Rather than her Padmé Battle Dress, Queen Amidala is in that red dress we saw in most of the marketing materials. If you're going to make a six-pack of figures from the 1999 movies, plus or minus Anakin, this is who you should pick. (I'd probably have swapped out Jar Jar for Anakin but I won't deny that Jar Jar is a more interesting looking action figure.)
So how are they? If it's really only $60, I think it will be a good set and let me tell you why.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Gamorrean Guard (The Retro Collection). This is a new mold for 2023, based on the 1983 figure. A vintage Kenner figure has better sculpting, with sharper detail and better paint - but if you only know that old figure from photos or fuzzy memories, this is a really good substitute. It feels sturdy and he can hold the ax with no problems, with botoxed detail on the face and armor. Is it a perfect replica? No, he's a little wider-eyed and shinier in the silver - but if you're looking to fill out a scene with retro Kenner Gamorreans, were it not in a 6-pack, this would be a great way to do it. Read on!
This week in Star Wars Q&A - What's with all the cheap stuff? Closeouts, my good man. And how can you clean up a sticky plastic figure really well? The answer may disgust you.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Morgan Elsbeth (The Vintage Collection). This is a good figure, with nice deco and sculpting, plus an excellent likeness. But she has no accessories, and is $17. A variant head would have been nice - and was probably spoiler-locked from development - as would a nod to her spear in the previous series. Nothing in the packaging is bad, so as long as you weren't expecting accessories for your money, you'll be happy. Read on!

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2, The Black Series). This is a new mold for 2023, larger than the 2013 version and weirder. He's got a telescoping neck with on-board storage for all his claws and arms, plus a retractable third leg with an articulated foot. That's an unusual feature in Hasbro R2-D2 figures. It's by no means perfect, but it's a pretty great replacement for the old one if you feel like dropping $25 on another R2-D2, which I of course did. Read on!
