While no pre-order dates were listed, Gizmodo gave us some good news for old Kenner fans. In the article Ahsoka Goes Retro in These Vintage-Inspired Star Wars Toys, we got a slideshow of 7 unpackaged mostly-new figures which you can go see. But do you want rambling commentary? You do? Gosh I love you people. Of course I'll ramble for you!
Figures were shown without packaging. I assume this means there may be a secondary reveal or possibly even unseen accessories to follow, but at least what we saw is generally exciting thus far. Read on!
Ahsoka Tano appears to be identical to the 2022 release but adds a nice Jedi robe of some sort. Is it worth buying again? Maybe - closeout stores like DD's Discounts have had the previous The Mandalorian release for as low as five bucks, and I assume there may be more around. I'll be buying her and the entire wave, as I am shameless and love these things.
Morgan Elsbeth seems to have no accessories, but is an all-new sculpt that seems to more or less follow how old Kenner figures look. Her hair isn't quite t he right color and she's missing that forehead detail, plus she could really benefit from a cape. Alas, it does not appear that there's a lot going on other than the base figure sculpt. I assume this means if these hit retailers, she'll be the last one on the pegs.
Sabine Wren looks like she got Morgan's accessory budget. While her removable helmet seems like it may be from a similar sculpt as Bo-Katan Kryze's non-removable head, the rest of the figure seems new. She's got purple hair on a smaller head, a hilt on her belt, a green lightsaber, and blue and yellow blasters. I think this is probably the best of the line and may even be one of the best Retro figures of the year. I hope Hasbro makes a lot of them.
Marrok delivers what looks like an ex-Inquisitor with a cape and a double-edged lightsaber. The knight-like helmet makes me think a familiar face is under the helmet, but I guess we'll see if it's a secret agent, an undead old friend, or what. The sculpting seems to be pretty good and it looks like something that could exist with your other real old toys, plus or minus the fact that the cape seems to be excellent.
General Hera Syndulla is more or less what I imagined, other than the pose of the head on the torso. Orange pants, bomber jacket, blaster - she's good. She even has tampo symbols on the arms, which I assume Kenner wouldn't have budgeted. Having said that, these figures are likely to be $10-$12 and original Kenner figures would be under $9 when adjusted for inflation, so it's nice they're a smidgen better than what we would've had in the 1980s.
HK-87 Assassin Droid is another one I expect will sell well. He has a Battle Droid-ish blaster that I assume we'll see again next year, decent colors, and a sculpt that looks a little better than I think what Kenner would have given us. He has no robes or capes, and could probably have used one. You'll buy it. It's cool.
Chopper will sell. You won't be able to find him. The sticker on his chest is a bit better than what Kenner would have done, with extra detail and shading - it's excellent. There may be more paint on his legs than Kenner would give us, but he looks like something that could have been on the pegs in 1985 next to Thall Joben and Jord Dusat. Or Vlix, not that we got him here. Not that we're bitter. I expect I will never see this figure on a store peg.
