Star Wars: The Retro Collection Pipeline Reveals More from 1978 Time Warp

By Adam Pawlus — Sunday, December 8, 2024

In what is arguably the most important news of the year for Kenner fanatics, Hasbro Pulse revealed six new - well, five new, and a sixth - Kenner Star Wars action figures from the film called Star Wars on social media today.

In this set you'll find the Rebel Fleet Trooper, Han Solo (Imperial Stormtrooper Outfit), Luke Skywalker (Yavin), Walrus Man, Sandtrooper, and Dr. Evazan.

But why, you ask, is this exciting? Let's have a fake Q&A.

Q. Aren't these figures that came out 48 years ago?

A. No - the only one of these characters that were sold in the original line was Walrus Man.  While Hasbro could redo the original Kenner design, that seems antithetical to what the line has been so far. The rest of these figures weren't made until the 1990s - Han Solo came out as a Froot Loops mail-in in 1995, and all of the rest were made in 1997 in the then-current POTF2 house style.

Q. Where will these be sold, and when?

A. This information was not yet revealed.

Q. What's the big deal about these characters?

A. Hasbro has only made three all-new, never-before-made Original Trilogy "Retro Kenner" figures since restarting the line in 2019 - Grand Moff Tarkin, Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder), and Mon Mothma. Before that, it was 1985 with Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise and the Imperial Gunner. It's really exciting!

Q. If I want to go back and fill in the gaps I missed in The Retro Collection, can I?

A. Yes, but some are more expensive than others. If you go to your local closeout store, you may find unsold 2023 releases from Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, or Return of the Jedi. Just last week Entertainment Earth had a Black Friday deal on the first six characters. Click here to see what they've got in stock. Also there's always eBay, as the first couple of years of the line are kind of in a lull and can be had cheaply.

Unfortunately some sets are also very expensive. The 2023 Return of the Jedi boxed set with Yak Face and Mon Mothma is over $200 - hopefully fans will raise a stink about it and Hasbro can make another run. Yoda is still pricey and could stand to be reissued - perhaps the brown snake variant - but most of everything else can be acquired pretty cheaply.

Q. Wait, did you say Sandtrooper? Shouldn't it be "Imperial Stormtrooper (Tatooine Battle Gear)" or something like that?

A. I mean, I'd think so, yeah.

Q. Is there anything else coming for 2025 or beyond?

A. Nothing has been shown yet, but I'm hoping it keeps going. Hasbro loves higher price points, and remaking 1978-1985 vehicles and playsets allow them to manufacture toys - most of which have absolutely zero paint on them - that would reasonably be more expensive and the kind of thing that might suck more fans back into buying toys. After all, a massive chunk of the older action figure collector population buys this stuff (including Vintage and Retro) because of how much they loved the old toys as children. It wouldn't be too hard to convince people to buy a mint in sealed box Dewback or X-Wing at Target were such a thing to ever be manufactured again, and hopefully, not two or three years apart from another wave of such things.
