It’s not news that Darth Maul is back in 2012. The tattooed Sith Lord is the face of the Hasbro 2012 line and also will make a much anticipated appearance in The Clone Wars series. For his Vintage Collection figure, Hasbro achieves a masterstroke of sculpt, articulation, and even tailoring.
Like the Darth Sidious of this wave, Hasbro manages to capture a fantastic design with a sculpt that evokes a lurched, aggressive posture. The horns are sculpted a little larger to enhance an overall menacing iteration of the Sith Apprentice and his facial features and paint app are pretty true to character
There were apparently quality control issues in the assembly line as this particular sample’s belt/sash was assembled backwards. But a twist and adjustment of the torso quickly solves the problem.
The material used for the soft goods is perfect, as it allows the figure to be posed in dynamic fashion with the removable cowl. It’s even slightly textured to be more film authentic. A detachable two part lightsaber, binoculars, and hilt make just the right accessories.
We’ve been waiting since 1999 for Hasbro to produce an “ultimate” Maul. With VC85, we’re happy to say they’ve nailed him.
