So a lot happened today. Indiana Jones V is (as far as we know) still set for 2021, but Disney has delayed and announced a ton of movies with a few still yet-to-be announced. Avatar 2 got pushed to 2021 with sequels every other year - so 2023, 2025, and 2027. For those keeping track, that means Avatar 2 will be out 12 years after the first movie. The time between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace was 16 years.
3 unspecified Star Wars movies are now set for Christmas 2022, 2024, and 2026. Marvel movies from Fox are also getting delayed, or possibly retooled or buried. Click here for more from Variety.
With multiple Star Wars projects in development, it wasn't specified if this was the one from the Game of Thrones guys or Rian Johnson's movies. Or even if that had been decided - for all we know both are in competition for the right to be born right now.
Depending on your perspective, this could be good news or a grim future. Avatar will no doubt pilfer resources from other popular franchises under the roof of the House of Mouse, and Disney has proven to be a less-than-wonderful steward of the pre-Disney era of Star Wars as merchandising has gone. Will we see more classic stuff in "off" years, or even less stuff overall to avoid competing with the other biggest sci-fi franchise that it is presently popular to hate on?
